Computer Numerically Controlled [CNC] programmers develop programs that cab control plastic or metal parts processing or machining using automatic equipment, systems, or tools. CNC programming is a great career and opens the door in industries like architecture, automotive, and aeronautical. CNC programmers need to work in a manufacturing environment, where machines can be loud and they need to be on their feet most of the time.

Role and responsibilities of CNC programmer
- Read & interpret blueprints – The blueprint design of the product needs to be read thoroughly, to set the machines for component production. This needs familiarity with CAD [Computer Aided Design] software.
- Verify machine settings & positioning – The moment settings are configured the CNC programmer will not leave their machines. Each machine needs periodic checking to ensure that the drills, lathes, and mills are properly aligned.
- Configure mills & lathes – Formulas needed to program the mills & lathes via CAM [Computer Aided Manufacturing] software need to be written. It will involve start & endpoints, entering tool registries, equalizers, and conditional switches. Knowledge of geometry & trigonometry is a must.
- Employ preventative maintenance – CNC programmers ensure that the performance of their machines is remarkable. They plan and execute routine maintenance checklist as well as troubleshoot basic malfunctions.
- Maintain raw materials inventory – CNC programmer coordinate with a purchase manager to ensure that there are sufficient raw materials to stay on top of production.
- Revise programs – Programs or tapes get revised to remove errors and retest the programs to ensure problems got resolved. Encoded tapes get compared with original part specs and blueprints to confirm instruction accuracy.
